Minhwa (Korean traditional folk painting) has long been understood, quite literally, as the "paintings of the common people." This is likely because most works of Minhwa we see today have been passed down anonymously. Beneath the time-honored eaves of royal palaces, across the ornate ceiling of Hwaeomjeon, on the outer walls of nameless spaces, and inside the master quarters of noble residences... Paradoxically, these paintings of the ordinary people came to occupy and represent the grandest spaces of the upper class. Their subjects are remarkably diverse: simple repeating patterns, classical stories, the full range of human emotions, and boundless realms of imagination.
Minhwa has long since transcended its boundaries through subjects and materials, reality and ideals, and the expansion of its foundational framework. What is even more extraordinary is that these boundaries are still expanding today. Underlying this is a continued departure from conventional frameworks, the boundless expression of popular sentiment, the unconventional use of materials and colors, and the everyday wishes to pray for good fortune and ward off evil, which were the fundamental themes at the very inception of Minhwa.
This exhibition focuses on Chaekgado (paintings of books and scholars' accoutrements), Eohaedo (paintings of fish and crabs), and Hwajodo (paintings of flowers and birds) among the vibrant themes of Minhwa. Through Chaekgado, we can observe our ancestors' passion for knowledge; through Eohaedo, their aspirations for freedom and social advancement and through Hwajodo, the warm and joyful sensibilities inherent in our daily lives.
Kwon Jeong-soon has long poured her heart and soul into the art of Minhwa. Even now, she remains wholly devoted to expanding the reach of Minhwa, striving to share its true essence with the public and future generations of artists. This exhibition stands as the fruit of those untiring efforts, designed to adorn and elevate the space, allowing people to feel as though they are opening a book in a library, gliding underwater, or wandering through a serene garden on a warm spring day. This is an act of bringing grandeur with childlike simplicity to the humble spaces of ordinary people, as well as an opportunity to reflect once more upon the intrinsic values of Minhwa and its significance at its very inception, thereby engraving its true worth.
